OrderSchirin Kretschmann's works can be perceived as an exploration of situational conditions of space: Using everyday materials, she intervenes temporarily in a painterly-installative way. In PROCESS, PERFORMANCE, PRESENCE, for example, she prepared the walls of the Kunstverein with leather grease, thus uncovering unexpected perceptual spaces due to the specific characteristics of the material. In this way, Kretschmann ascribes to the materials themselves an essential aesthetic decision-making power with regard to the external appearance of her artistic works.
For the Jahresgabe Open Destination, the artist dusted sandpaper with graphite and transferred the powder onto sheets of paper using the frottage technique. Through the process of rubbing, Kretschmann literally creates open structures - on the one hand through the partial destruction of the vulnerable paper, and on the other hand through the emergence of random and unique patterns from the now solidified graphite, which, depending on the incidence of light, reveals a silvery shimmer.
