The works of the sculptor Inge Mahn (* November 20, 1943 in Teschen, county of Teschen, province of Upper Silesia; † June 19, 2023 in Berlin) are characterized by a clear formal language inspired by everyday objects as well as architectural elements. In her sculptures, she portrays everyday objects by reducing them to their essentials and recreating them in works made largely of plaster. In her intensive engagement with exhibition spaces, she also creates large-scale, time- and site-specific interventions that respond to architectural features and incorporate them as the starting point for her own installations. For Inge Mahn, conceptual and craft creative processes are inextricably linked, taking into account the inherent dynamics of the material, which prefers certain forms.
Inge Mahn provides the Kunstverein Braunschweig with a unique piece as a Jahresgabe: During the exhibition, the Standing Curtains, 2017 lined up as free-standing objects in the room in a symbolic act of making themselves independent, starting from the Garden Hall. Contrary to their conventional function, these do not conceal or reveal anything behind them; they only display themselves. One of the curtains made of Mahn's preferred working material, plaster, is now available.
