Gili Tal’s work has drawn on genres of commercial photography such as that of real estate, imitating its tropes in an attempt to fathom how the urban environment is fetishised.
Tal’s edition Things to Do comes from a series of snapshots of London street scenes mimicking the exaggerated tone and photographic angles found in city guides and in-flight magazines. Young people relax in rows of deck chairs, right in the middle of the shopping district in Spitalfields, an upmarket area in London. The work’s title contrasts with its subject of banal non-activity in an area set aside specifically for this purpose.
