OrderIn his works, Carlos Garaicoa explores urbanism and architecture, depicting social and political problems. His hometown of Havana in particular reflects the crisis situation of urban space, which has been at the center of Garaicoa's works since the 1990s. Crumbling ruins such as those in La Puntilla - a formerly rich and bustling neighborhood - recall the past glory of pre-socialist buildings. At the same time, Garaicoa's black-and-white photographs refer to failed modern utopias and ideologies such as communism or socialism, which have left behind "ruins of the future".
