Hank Schmidt in der Beek
Die Fürst Pückler-Bluse
The artist Hank Schmidt in der Beek deals with the history of modern art and painting in particular. In extensive series of works consisting of paintings or collages, he cites well-known motifs, combining them freely and creating entirely new contexts – all with a healthy dose of (self-)irony. His uninhibited perspective and bold handling of works that could be said to have written a famous part of modern art history themselves produce a sense of humor and lightness, a liberation from the burden of gravitas.
But Hank Schmidt in der Beek’s work goes far beyond an interest in traditional “wall art”: as a poet, writer, musician and member of the band "Das Lunsentrio", he allows a varied spectrum of artistic exploration to emerge.
The exhibition at the Kunstverein Braunschweig is Hank Schmidt in der Beek’s most comprehensive presentation to date, for which he has developed numerous works directly related to Braunschweig and the architecture of the Villa Salve Hospes.

GUEST ROOM
For each exhibition, artists are invited to make use of the space that was originally a guest room in the Villa Salve Hospes as a commentary on the main presentation. At Hank Schmidt in der Beek’s invitation, we are delighted to welcome the artist Anna Parkina, who among other things explores the Russian avant-garde from a contemporary perspective.
