On the occasion of the New York grant awarded by the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung and the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture, the Kunstverein Braunschweig is presenting Claudia Kapp, the grant's 2010 recipient.
In her works, Kapp uses various media, such as video, sound, and light, in a variety of ways to reinterpret spaces, everyday objects, as well as social rituals and cultural practices and take them to an elevated, mystical level. By artfully distorting patterns of perception, she succeeds in linking the familiar with the mysterious.
In collaboration with Benjamin Blanke and Anna Jandt, Claudia Kapp has now transformed the Kunstverein Braunschweig’s Remise into a poetically enraptured and complex, overall work of art: the glowing flourescent letters on the roof beckon the viewer, seem to address him or her directly: YOU YOU. Yet the façade’s windows and doors have been sealed with wooden boards, and the familiar entrance into the interior is blocked. An image is created that is both inviting as well as hermetic. The double address on the roof cannot be categorized – it seems to be an echo or a leftover fragment of temporal repetition. One eventually gains access to the exhibition spaces through a side door in the garden.
One of the exhibition’s primary interests is the zone of transition in which light meets darkness. The installation Rising Set (The Dark Hours of the Sun) in the Remise’s main room consists of five sunsets projected alongside each other. They undulate yet always remain in the radius of the twilight. Because of its multiplication, the romantically glorified image of the setting sun is placed in the context of Egyptian mythology by means of a story being told by a narrator: the voice ushers the visitor through the 12-hour nighttime journey of the sun. On a poetic level, the descriptions of the underworld sketch the archetypical elements of a journey through that space that C.G. Jung referred to as the collective unconscious.
Spaces on the upper floor of the Remise that are otherwise not accessible are also opened. Thus, the viewer sets out on a journey through the entire building, while his or her perception is irritated by the play with light and dark and unfamiliar spatial situations.
In 2010, Claudia Kapp (*1974 in Freiburg, lives in Berlin) received a grant, initiated in 1999 by the State of Lower Saxony and since 2005 awarded in cooperation with the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung, that enabled her to spend 12 months participating in the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York and present two exhibitions at art associations in Lower Saxony. The exhibition YOU YOU was developed in collaboration with Benjamin Blanke (*1973 in Karlsruhe, lives in Berlin) and Anna Jandt (*1980 in Bremen, lives in Berlin, member of the artists’ group FORT). Further works by Claudia Kapp will be shown at the Edith Russ-Haus für Medienkunst in Oldenburg from November 26, 2011, to January 29, 2012.
